Sousse, Tunisia

Archaeological Museum of Sousse, Tunisia

The Medina of Sousse, inscribed on the World Heritage List, hosts, inside its medieval Kasbah, the new Archaeological Museum of Sousse.

At the entrance of the Museum, in the large vaulted room of the reception, are presented the   history and monuments of the Sahel from antiquity to the Muslim era.

Located under the big courtyard of the Kasbah, the underground rooms of the Museum reach 2000m of surface and bathe in a light, artificial and natural, which contributes to the staging of the collections and scenographic atmospheres of the different spaces. The collections, made up of mosaics, sculptures, lapidaries and ceramic furniture, come from several sites in the ancient Sahel.

The collection of Roman floor mosaics, exposed below the circulations or fixed on picture rails, is one of the most important in the Mediterranean world. These mosaics evoke in shimmering colors and artistic compositions, beliefs, games, artistic activity and more particularly everyday life.
