Gightis

This ancient site is located in the south-east of the country, along the Gulf of Boughrara which forms, with the complicity of the island of Djerba, a real inland sea conducive to fishing, but also to trade with the rest of the country. Mediterranean.
Maritime counter, therefore, as evidenced by the remains of port facilities now far from the shore, and that since the earliest antiquity, as evidenced by the presence of Punic necropolis north and north-west of the city, but also an important road junction connecting the hinterland to the coast and the South to the depths of the Saharan area. This explains the extent of the site, surprising at the edge of the desert, as well as the sumptuousness of its many monuments both sacred and secular.
According to archaeologists, the real growth of the city is at the end of the 1st century, reached its peak in the 2nd century and extends until the 4th century: a remarkable duration.
A sustained campaign of maintenance and restoration carried out in recent years has cleared the site and highlight the various components: capitol, forum, sacred spaces, market, living quarters, etc.
