The Fort Of Hammamet

Hammamet, Tunisia

The fort of Hammamet

It is one of the many fortifications that stretches all along the Tunisian coast, military works that were used for the defense of the coast. The borj - bastion - was erected in the year 893. By 1463, it was considerably enlarged to also serve as a residence for the governor of the city.
At the end of the sixteenth century, it was the subject of major refits to adapt to firearms. The monument was turned into a barracks after the introduction of the French protectorate over Tunisia in 1881.
In its current state, the citadel follows the shape of a deformed square of 50m. side flanked at the corners of four salient. A single door gives access through a double-bend corridor. The courtyard is lined with cells that served as prisons and stores; in the middle is the mausoleum of Sidi Bouali, a warrior monk of the late fifteenth century.
