The Kuriat Islands

Tunisia

Kuriat Islands, turtle islands

The Kuriat Islands are located northeast of Cape Monastir, about 20 km from the mainland. These are two small islands covering about 270 ha for Qurya El Kbira, and 50 ha for Qurya Sghira. These small earthen emergences consist of sandstones belonging to shallows and occupy a pseudo-anticlinal position in the middle of a ditch filled by a very thick sedimentary formation. They are characterized by a flat and low morphology. These islands are a migratory stopover for an avifauna of international importance, such as the meager gull, classified as a vulnerable species. They are one of the main nesting sites of the Carettacaretta turtle in the southern Mediterranean, and thus constitute a vulnerable ecosystem.
