Lake Echkeul
BIZERTE & LAKE ICHKEUL: From 8 AM to 8 PM
The day begins with the discovery of the city of Bizerte, which is one of the most French cities and the oldest in Tunisia. After lunch in Bizerte, continue to the Ichkeul National Park, which is the most beautiful natural reserve of Tunisia.
The Ichkeul wetland is one of the main wintering grounds for waterfowl in North Africa. There are hundreds of thousands of them. Composed of the lake of the same name, marshes, and an isolated mountain range, it constitutes a unique set in Tunisia, 25 km from Bizerte.
This 12,600-hectare park has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a biosphere reserve. It's a paradise for birds. It is home to thousands of migratory birds such as greylag geese, whistling ducks, coots, and storks.
Passerines, raptors, reptiles, turtles, and buffalo also make their home in this park. The flora of the reserve is very varied. There are more than 500 species of plants. Perched on top of a hill, an ecomuseum explains the functioning of the park's ecosystem.
Surrounded by the Mediterranean, north and east, by the lakes of Bizerte and Ichkeul, to the south, the city of Bizerte is also accessible through a corridor (channel Tinja) towards Menzel Bourguiba and Tabarka, and a mobile bridge that connects it to Zarzouna and then to Tunis.
